The Lions' Drafted for their New Coordinators, Not Need.

The Detroit Lions had obvious needs in their secondary last season, but the 2014 NFL Draft was not just about addressing last season's needs for the Lions, it was about giving their new offensive and defensive coordinators the tools they need to succeed.

New offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi understudied under Sean Payton in New Orleans, where Jimmy Graham became a star and an integral part of their offense as an athletic hybrid TE/WR.

While most draft pundits were surprised when the Lions picked TE Eric Ebron at #10 even after the Lions had re-signed Brandon Pettigrew to a 4-year deal, it didn't take a genius to see that pick coming.

GM Martin Mahew was just trying to give Lombardi the mismatches he needed at the TE position to run his offense.

Pettigrew was too slow to fill that role, as was Joseph Fauria, who is better suited as a red zone threat than as an every down TE.

My only concern with Ebron is that many NFL teams have blown many of high round picks on TE's trying to find the next Graham, Gonzalez, Gates, Gronk, gtc.

Likewise, when many experts expected the Lions to take a CB in the 2nd Round like Stanley Jean-Baptiste of Nebraska, it simply wasn't going to happen.

New defensive coordinator in Teryl Austin certainly could have used an upgrade at CB, but he NEEDED an OLB who could rush the passer to run his defense to run his hybrid 3-4/4-3 defensive scheme.

And no matter how bad the Lions were at CB, Austin was not about to introduce those essential 3-4 packages featuring Ashley Palmer or Darryl Tapp at OLB.
Enter 2nd Round draft pick Kyle Van Noy, a pass rushing demon from BYU, who can both rush the passer and drop back into coverage.

Sure, a Mormon like Kyle Van Noy might have problems adjusting to life in Detroit to the extent that the moment his bike gets stolen he's likely to run back to Utah to be with his moms, but he fits the bill of the hybrid OLB/DE that Austin needs and was used to in Baltimore.

And don't be shocked when the Lions have fully transitioned to a 3-4 defense after another year or two.

Sure Detroit would need another edge rusher, which is why they'll only be playing more 4-3/3/4 hybrid fronts in the near future, but the transition has already begun.

Assuming that their current roster is retained, Ndamukong Suh would play 3-4 DE (think Haloti Ngata), Nick Fairley would play NT, and Ziggy Ansah could play the weakside end (think J.J. Watt rushing the passer and batting down passes with his long wingspan).

Van Noy would be one OLB, Tulloch and Levy would be the ILB's, and the other OLB would likely need to be a 1st or 2nd Round pick next year.

Of course, if the Lions lose both Suh and Fairley next year to free agency, no defensive front is going to work, but at least Kyle Van Noy's fiance, Marissa Powell, will still look good no matter how stupid she is.

Cornerback? That's still a need.

4th Round Pick Nevin Lawson is a developmental nickel back, not an starter outside to help fill in if Chris Houston is still injured, or simply done once the season starts.

But at least the Lions are in a position to hit the ground running under new coordinators Joe Lombardi and Teryl Austin, and that should at least have everyone excited about what they can bring to the table.

That is, until we think about our needs in the secondary.

2014 NFL Mock Draft - Final

Here is my final 2014 NFL Mock Draft which I will be submitting for national mock draft competitions, including The Huddle Report.

My mock draft has been linked by The Football Fan Spot, Sports Jabber, DC Pro Sports ReportWalter Football, FF Toolbox, The Football ExpertFantasy Football Help Desk, Niners Nation, EDS Football, NFL Mock Draft Central and NFL Pro Zach in their Mock Draft Databases.

1st Round

1. Houston Texans – Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina: Houston is looking to trade down, but may not find a suitor at their asking price, which is looking more and more like a package involving 2 or 3 1st Round picks, depending on how far they'd be asked to move back.

2. St. Louis Rams (from Washington) – Greg Robinson, T, Auburn: The question is whether to select Greg Robinson, Jake Mathews, or trade down. Right now it looks like the Rams are leaning toward Greg Robinson's upside, although Jake Mathews seems to be about as safe of a pick as there is for a team that once took Jason Smith with the second overall pick of the draft.

3. Jacksonville Jaguars - Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M: I'm buying into the hype. This franchise needs something, and at least hype equates to hope.

4. Cleveland Browns - Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson: Cleveland's dream scenario may be having Sammy Watkins fall to them without having to trade up.

5. Oakland Raiders - Khalil Mack, OLB, Buffalo: This pick seams like a no-brainer, but then again, this is Reggie McKenzie selecting for the Raiders

6. Atlanta Falcons - Jake Mathews, OT, Texas A&M: Atlanta would love to move up for a pass rusher like Jadeveon Clowney or Khalil Mack, but would be perfectly happy to settle for a prototype LT like Jake Mathews.

7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Mike Evans, WR, Texas A&M: While it initially looked like the Bucs simply needed a speedy receiver to play in the slot, Mike Williams finally wore out his welcome in Tampa Bay by getting stabbed in the thigh by his brother, making either Mike Evans or Plaxico Burress his ideal replacement.

8. Minnesota Vikings – Aaron Donald, DT, Pittsburgh: The Vikings are looking for players who can disrupt up front in Mike Zimmer's new defense. Aaron Donald of Pitt can play the role that Geno Atkins did for Zimmer in Cincinnati.

9. Buffalo Bills - Taylor Lewan, T, Michigan: It looks like the goal for the Bills in this draft is to do everything they can to put second year QB E.J. Manuel in a position to succeed. If a true LT like Taylor Lewan is still available, Buffalo could move Cordy Glenn to a more natural position like RT or even G where he could put his physicality to better use. Of course, Lewan has some off the field issues that make Ritchie Incognito look like a Boy Scout troop leader, so stay tuned to see if the #9 spot is his floor as the Mel Kiper, Jr.'s of the world think, or his ceiling.

10. Detroit Lions - Eric Ebron, TE, North Carolina: According to new defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, the Lions are looking for a "flamethrower" at OLB and a "riverboat gambler" at CB. The problem is that none of the players projected to be available at those positions seem to be worth the #10 pick. Don't believe the hype about the Lions trading up to the #2 spot for Sammy Watkins, because that's just not going to happen. The Lions could make a surprise pick and take Eric Ebron of North Carolina to play the Jimmy Graham role in Joe Lombardi's new offense, or possibly even Cody Latimer of Indiana, who fits the mold of Jim Caldwell's affinity for receivers with good hands.

11. Tennessee Titans - Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State: With Alterraun Verner leaving in free agency, the Titans have a huge hole at CB. An OLB with proven pass rush skills like Anthony Barr could also be a consideration to fill a need in their new 3-4 defense depending on what Detroit does at #10, but Barr's game has been scrutinized to the extent that he no longer appears to be a top #15 prospect.

12. New York Giants - Zack Martin, T/G, Notre Dame: The Giants have an offensive line that is a complete mess, and tackle is the best place to start to address that problem. Drafting a true LT would have a positive cascade effect, allowing Justin Pugh to move to G and Will Beatty to slide to RT as he comes off of what was a subpar year even before he suffered a massive leg injury that could cause him to miss the start of the 2014 season.

13. St Louis Rams - Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, S, Alabama: St. Louis needs to upgrade their secondary at both S and CB. Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams values an athletic FS who he can line up to show offenses different looks and still has the speed still patrol the deep and middle parts of the field. That would make Ha Ha Clinton-Dix the ideal pick given his fantastic range.

14. Chicago Bears - Calvin Pryor, S, Louisville: The Bears are looking for anybody other than Chris Conte as their starting S this season. Calvin Pryor fits that profile.

15. Pittsburgh Steelers – Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State: The "Steel Curtain" is in need of repairs. While the Steelers have not traditionally drafted CB's in the 1st Round, Darqueze "No Fly Zone" Dennard could make them think twice about passing on one this year. In addition to being a valuable press-man CB, Dennard is also the type of high character player that the Rooney family seems to value.

16. Dallas Cowboys - Anthony Barr, DE/OLB, UCLA: The Cowboys are not going to land Aaron Donald unless they trade up. If they stay at #16, they need to get Rod Marinelli a pass rusher, as his defensive philosophy is predicated upon getting pressure from his front four.

17. Baltimore Ravens - C.J. Mosley, LB, Alabama: The Ravens will be in the market for a FS like Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, an ILB like C.J. Mosley, or a plug and play OT like Zack Martin or Taylor Lewan. TE Eric Ebron would also be in the mix under Ozzie Newsome's best player available philosophy. If all of those players are off the board look for the Ravens to try and trade down for more picks.

18. New York Jets Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon State: The Jets instantly improved their offense by signing Michael Vick, who will ultimately become their starter. Now they need to find him another legitimate receiving target to go along with free agent signee Eric Decker. Because Decker is a bigger target, a more explosive WR like either Odell Beckham, Jr. or Brandin Cooks would make for an ideal complement.

19. Miami Dolphins - Morgan Moses, T, Virginia: While Morgan Moses is a reach, the Dolphins are essentially in a position where they have to find a competent RT if they even want to field an offense next season.

20. Arizona Cardinals - Blake Bortles, QB, Central Florida: Carson Palmer isn't getting any younger...Or better for that matter.

21. Green Bay Packers - Ryan Shazier, LB, Ohio State: Finding playmakers on the defensive side of the ball is a must for the Packers. Green Bay needs more athleticism at ILB, and Ryan Shazier of Ohio State would give them some much needed athleticism at SLB to help cover for the deficiencies of the steady, yet pedestrian A.J. Hawk.

22. Philadelphia Eagles - Odell Beckham, Jr., WR, LSU: Philadelphia could use a S to take over starting duties from Nate Allen, but they also created a need at WR by releasing their best big play threat, DeSean Jackson. If Calvin Pryor and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix are both off the board, the Eagles could turn to Odell Beckham, Jr., possibly in a trade up with Baltimore, as an explosive threat at WR to compensate for the loss of Jackson

23. Kansas City Chiefs - Marqise Lee, WR, USC: The Chiefs could go in several different directions in this year's draft, whether it's DE, S, CB, WR or TE. WR Marqise Lee of USC is a safer option than other receivers like the talented but enigmatic Kelvin Benjamin, who probably doesn't need to be anywhere near someone like Dwayne Bowe during his formative years in the NFL.

24. Cincinnati Bengals - Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State: Bradley Roby seems to have come up clean, at least when it comes to alcohol, when it comes to his arrest for passing out behind the wheel of his car. That frees him up to go to Cincinnati to add some youth, size and speed to their secondary.

25. San Diego Chargers - Kyle Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech: San Diego's biggest need is at CB, at Kyle Fuller is fast, big and has man to man cover skills. After he goes off the board, all of the remaining CB's will be deficient in at least one of those areas.

26. Cleveland Browns (from Indianapolis) - Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville: Owner Jimmy Haslam loves his fellow SEC boy Johnny Manziel, while new GM Ray Farmer is said to be infatuated with Teddy Bridgewater. Haslam is said to be willing to defer to Farmer, which means that Cleveland will be looking for yet another GM in the event that Bridgewater doesn't work out and Manziel sets the league on fire.

27. New Orleans Saints - Dee Ford, OLB/DE, Auburn: The only issue with Dee Ford are his lumbar spine issues, for which he was flagged and not allowed to participate at the NFL Combine. From a talent standpoint, he's a 1st Rounder, but if his back truly is an issue, he could fall much deeper into the 2nd Round.

28. Carolina Panthers - Cody Latimer, WR, Indiana: The Panthers have a huge need at LT, and while they have done their homework on Morgan Moses, they don't seem all that convinced that he, or any of the T's on the board, are worth a 1st Round pick. In that event, Cody Latimer of Indiana is a big, fast, sure handed receiver who ran the entire route tree in college...His only problem is that he played for lowly Indiana.

29. New England Patriots - Ra'Shede Hageman, DT/DE, Minnesota: Vince Wilfork is aging and injury prone. While he recently signed a three year contract, Wilfork is 32, and it was structured so that it is essentially just a one year deal. It would therefore make sense for New England to draft a NT to ultimately replace Wilfork in the event that he's released after this season.

30. San Francisco 49ers - Jason Verrett, CB, Texas Christian: With Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown both signing with the Raiders in free agency, the 49ers need to find one or two starting caliber CB's in the draft. Bradley Roby clearly has some substance abuse issues that could make a team like the 49ers think twice about putting him on the same plane as Aldon Smith, so look for them to address their need at CB with Jason Verrett of TCU, who may be undersized, but is an absolute pit bull in coverage.

31. Houston Texans (projected trade with Denver) - Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State: So if the Texans are the team that bites on Derek Carr, does anybody think that they'd buy in on his desire to bring his brother David in as his back-up? Then again, bringing David Carr back to Houston can't be as bad as putting up with A.J. McCarron's reality TV show about his wedding to his to his fame whore girlfriend.

32. Seattle Seahawks - Stephon Tuitt, DE, Notre Dame: The Seahawks had relatively few defections after winning the Super Bowl, although they did suffer losses at DE with Red Bryant and Chris Clemmons departing via free agency. A base DE like Stephon Tuitt could help alleviate those departures and help maintain Seattle's stout run defense.

2nd Round

33. Denver Broncos (projected trade with Houston) - Stanley Jean Baptiste, CB, Nebraska: Denver can trade back for an additional mid round pick and still solidify the back end of their secondary.

34. Washington Redskins - Cyrus Kouandjio, T, Alabama: Cyrus Kouandjio would not only provide additional protection for RG3, but a right tackle of his size would open some serious holes in the running game, making him an ideal fit with the Redskins.

Speaking of which, let's get the Redskins to change their name to the "Pigskins." It's not racist, it's a football reference, it pays homage to Washington's fan base of the 1980's, and the team could still call themselves "The Skins." On top of that, a new hog related logo could help Daniel Snyder sell a boatload of merchandise...Seems like a win-win situation if you ask me.

35. Cleveland Browns - Xavier Su'a-Filo: With the Browns having addressed WR and QB with their first two selections, they can afford to go with a luxary pick and upgrade their offensive line with an elite G like Xavier Su'a-Filo, who could also possibly play RT if needed.

36. Oakland Raiders - Tom Savage, QB, Pittsburgh: Tom Savage was well traveled for a variety of reasons in his college career, but he has ideal NFL size and arm strength. His nomad ways make him a perfect Raider.

37. Atlanta Falcons - Jeremiah Attaochu, DE/OLB, Georgia Tech: Assuming Atlanta elects to go with a LT in the 1st Round, a raw but talented local product like Jeremiah Attaochu of Georgia Tech could be a steal when it comes to finding a bargain when it comes to a much needed pass rusher.

38. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Kyle Van Noy, OLB, BYU: With the Bucs moving back to a "Tampa-2" defense under new defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, they need to find LB's who can better fit that system. Kyle Van Noy of BYU would be an immediate improvement at the SAM.

39. Jacksonville Jaguars - Allen Robinson, WR, Penn State: With Justin Blackmon's future in Jacksonville, and the NFL for that matter, still up in the air, the Jags need to look for another go-to WR. Allen Robinson fills that bill. The only reason he's still available in the 2nd Round is due to inconsistent QB play and a deep WR class.

40. Minnesota Vikings - Zach Mettenberger, QB, LSU
: While he is coming off of a late season knee injury, Zack Mettenberger is ahead of schedule on his rehab and is already throwing for scouts. With a strong accurate arm and high football I.Q., Mettenberger is an ideal fit to ultimately take over in Norv Turner's new offense. It looks like a doctor's note will excuse him being flagged for a diluted urine sample at the Combine.

41. Buffalo Bills - Kelvin Benjamin: After giving E.J. Manuel LT, allowing Cordy Glenn to move to the right side, Buffalo could give Manuel an eventual go-to target in Kelvin Benjamin of Florida State, who's really just a poor man's Mike Evans.

42. Tennessee Titans - Jimmy Garoppolo, QB, Eastern Illinois: It looks like the Titans are interested in giving themselves an insurance option in the even that Jake Locker cannot return from the dreaded lisfranc foot injury. In fact, with Tennessee electing to decline Locker's fifth year option, they may be looking for more than just insurance.

43. New York Giants - Scott Crichton, DE, Oregon State: Selecting Zack Martin in the 1st Round would help the G-men rebuild their offensive line. An underrated DE like Scott Crichton in the 2nd Round would help re-fortify their once fierce pass rush, which has taken some hits due to age and free agency over the past few years.

44. St. Louis Rams - Davante Adams, WR, Fresno State: If the Rams can address LT, S and either a WR or a CB with their first three picks, I think they'd be pretty happy. With the top of this draft being extremely deep at WR, the value at that position trumps reaching for a CB.

45. Detroit Lions - Deone Buccanon, S, Washington State: In James Ihedigbo and Glover Quin, the Lions have two projected starters who are better off playing SS in an era when most teams are looking for two faster players who can play FS. Not only does Deone Buccanon of Oregon State have both range and a nose for the ball, but he has fantastic character as well.

46. Pittsburgh Steelers - Louis Nix, III, DT, Notre Dame: The Steelers would be wise to pass on a talent like Louis Nix, III in the 1st Round despite his talent simply because there are very few teams in the market for a true NT at the top of this year's draft.

47. Dallas Cowboys - Dominique Easley, DT/DE, Florida: Dallas could look at DE, S, WLB, or address their OL with their pick in the 2nd Round. If they can address DE in the 1st Round, a 3-Technique DT with 1st Round talent like Dominique Easley of Florida would be worth the gamble in the 2nd Round even though he's already undergone surgery on both of his knees.

48. Baltimore Ravens - Jimmie Ward, S, Northern Illinois: A hybrid like Jimmie Ward who can play FS would allow Matt Elam to move to his more natural position at SS.

49. New York Jets - Keith McGill, CB, Utah: After "swinging and missing" at the CB position in free agency, the Jets could go big and take Keith McGill of Utah, a 6'3, 210 pound player who will have teams looking to emulate the secondary of the Seahawks drooling.

50. Miami Dolphins - Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE, Washington: If the Dolphins land a RT in the 1st Round, a complete TE who can help pass protect like Austin Seferian-Jenkins could help bolster their line play and give Ryan Tannehill another receiving target.

51. Chicago Bears - Timmy Jernigan, DT, Florida State: Thanks to a diluted drug test, the Bears get one of their 1st Round targets in the 2nd Round.

52. Arizona Cardinals - Donte Moncrief, WR, Mississippi: The Cardinals could look at RT and S, but an explosive WR like Donte Moncrief who can play the slot would help draw coverage away from Larry Fitzgerald.

53. Green Bay Packers - Lamarcus Joyner, CB/S, Florida State: The lack of a playmaker at S was a huge problem for Green Bay last season. Lamarcus Joyner would give the Packers some much needed range and ball skills in the back end of their defense. Because he also played CB at Florida State, he'd also ultimately make for an ideal nickle in passing situations.

54. Philadelphia Eagles - Demarcus Lawrence, OLB/DE, Boise State: Philadelphia finished 32nd in the league in passing defense last season, and sometimes the best way to address your pass coverage is with your pass rush.

55. Cincinnati Bengals - Kony Ealy, DE, Missouri: Kony Ealy seems to be falling as the draft approaches, and the Bengals would love to get a player who they were once linked to in the 1st Round in the 2nd.

56.  San Francisco 49ers - Marcus Smith, DE, Louisville: While the 49'ers elected to use their 5th year option on Aldon Smith, they still need some insurance in case he's suspended for his latest run in with the law.

57. San Diego Chargers - Ja'Wuan James, T, Tennessee: After addressing their biggest need at CB, the Chargers could look to infuse some new blood on the offensive line. Ja'Wuan James projects immediately at RT, and if he can eventually slide over to LT, so much the better.

58. New Orleans Saints - Jarvis Landry, WR, LSU: The locals are clamoring for New Orleans to address their need at WR with Jarvis Landry of LSU. You can throw Landry's 40-yard dash time out the window, as he's one of the quickest receivers in this year's draft. As a bonus, he's a solid special teams player who just loves to play football.

59. Indianapolis Colts - Marcus Martin, C, USC: The Colts would be wise to bolster the interior of their offensive line with at least two early picks in this year's draft. Marcus Martin of USC is the cream of the crop, and would give Andrew Luck some much needed pocket stability in pass protection.

60. Carolina Panthers - Jordan Mathews, WR, Vanderbilt: The Panthers have a huge need at LT, but don't appear enamored with any of the prospects projected to be available by the time they pick in the 1st Round. Their other big whole is at WR, and they could double dip with two sure handed targets, a big play threat like Cody Latimer in the 1st Round, and a polished route runner like Jordan Mathews in the 2nd.

61. San Francisco 49ers - Paul Richardson, WR, Colorado: The 49ers biggest obstacle to returning to the Super Bowl are their division rivals, the Seattle Seahawks. The best way to counteract Seattle's super-sized secondary is with quickness, and that's where an explosive player like Paul Richardson in the slot would not only help negate their size advantage in their secondary, but possibly even turn it into a liability.

62. New England Patriots - Jace Amaro, TE, Texas Tech: With Aaron Hernandez's career over and Rob Gronkowski questionable to start the season, Jace Amaro of Texas A&M seems to be New England's prime target to replace Hernandez at TE given his size and pass catching ability.

63. Denver Broncos - Chris Borland, ILB, Wisconsin: The disinformation of the draft has already started, with an undisclosed team reportedly leaking that they have taken Chris Borland of Wisconsin off of their draft board due to a purported chronic shoulder injury/condition. Assuming that information is just a scare tactic, Borland is an instinctive player who can fill a hole at ILB for the Broncos, which is one of their final needs on defensive after a busy free agency period.

64. Seattle Seahawks - Joel Bitonio, T/G, Nevada: Joe Bitonio would help solidify the right side of the offensive line for the Seahawks.

Detroit Lions Potential Picks, Rounds 3 - 7

Here's how the rest of the 2014 Draft could work out in terms of projected value and need for the Detroit Lions:

Round 3,  Pick No. 12 - Carl Bradford, OLB, Arizona State: A pass rush specialist out of Arizona State, Carl Bradford could be a poor man's "flamethrower" that new defensive coordinator Teryl Austin is looking for at OLB should the Lions pass on that need in the first two Rounds of the draft.

Round 4, Pick No. 11 - Weston Richburg, C, Colorado State: Not only is Weston Richburg one of the top three centers in this year's draft, but he seems to be very interested in playing for the Lions. The feeling should be mutual. With Dominic Raiola nearing the final years of his career, Richburg could serve as an understudy and even help the Lions out as a backup G. Gabe Ikard could also be a later round option at C.

Round 4, Compensatory Pick - Aaron Murray, QB, Georgia: The Lions are going to regret not freeing up enough money to re-sign Shawn Hill, who may have been the best backup QB in the league. Jim Caldwell should know that Dan Orlovsky is not the answer, as his inability to adequately replace Peyton Manning helped cost him his job in Indianapolis three years ago.

Round 4, Compensatory Pick - Jaylen Watkins, CB, Florida: When the Lions met with Sammy Watkins' parents, they were really scouting his brother Jaylen, who proved to be a ballhawk at the Senior Bowl.

Round 6, Pick No. 13 - Jeff Janis, WR, Saginaw Valley State University: A fast, big WR, think of Jeff Janis as a white Kris Durham...Oh, wait.

Round 7 - Pick No. 12 - Cody Parkey, K, Auburn: Prior to the David Akers debacle last season, the Lions only had two PK's from 1980 through 2012 in Eddie Murray in Jason Hanson, either of whom the Lions would have probably signed last season had they been interested.

2014 Post Free Agency Mock Draft

Here is my Post Scouting Combine 2014 NFL Mock Draft. It will be followed by regular updates after the NFL Scouting Combine up until the NFL Draft on May 8th.

My mock draft has been linked by The Football Fan Spot, Sports Jabber, DC Pro Sports ReportWalter Football, FF Toolbox, hailRedskins.com, The Football ExpertFantasy Football Help Desk, The Huddle Report, Niners Nation, EDS Football, NFL Mock Draft Central and NFL Pro Zach in their Mock Draft Databases.

This is not a mock draft where I attempt play general manager and substitute my own judgment for the 32 NFL teams.

I do my best to research what particular players or positions each team may be targeting based upon the opinions of reliable beat writers, scouts and insiders in order to provide links and then my analysis as to why a team may be focusing on a particular player.

1st Round

1. Houston Texans – Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A and M: Houston is doing a stellar job of masking their target for the #1 overall pick, having been linked to nearly all of the top players in this year's draft. While the current flavor of the month is Jadeveon Clowney, like Mario Williams, he's not an ideal fit for a 3-4 defense. On the other hand, the Texans desperately need a franchise QB who can help them win immediately, and Johnny Manziel is probably the player most likely to immediately impact games in this year's QB class due to his dynamic scrambling ability.

2. Atlanta Falcons (via projected trade with St. Louis) – Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina: With needs at LT and DE, Atlanta can either stay put at #6 and select the best available offensive lineman, or be proactive and trade up for the draft's best player in South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney. I'd discount concerns about Clowney's effort given that he made little attempt to hide the fact that he was playing last season not to get hurt in light of his displeasure with the NCAA rule that requires players to remain in school for three years before declaring for the NFL Draft.

3. Jacksonville Jaguars – Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson: Much like the Browns, Jacksonville owner Shad Khan has already disclosed that he intends on finding a new quarterback for the Jaguars somewhere in this draft. The Jaguars will face perhaps the toughest question in the draft in deciding whether or not to draft that QB at #3, or selecting a higher rated impact player at another position like DE or WR. I'm thinking that if Jadeveon Clowney and Johnny Manziel are both off the board, Sammy Watkins will be the pick for the Jaguars.

4. Cleveland Browns - Khalil Mack, OLB, Buffalo: Is there a more dysfunctional franchise in all of pro sports right now than the Cleveland Browns? Regardless of who their coach is, the Browns won't be going anywhere until they find a franchise quarterback. While they have the ammunition to go get one, it seems like Cleveland is leaning towards waiting until pick #26 or even #35 before they select one. In fact, new head coach Mike Pettine seems to be sizing up Khalil Mack as his version of Mario Williams with the Browns.

5. Oakland Raiders - Greg Robinson, OT, Auburn: If there's a front office that can rival the Cleveland Browns for ineptness, it's the Oakland Raiders, who apparently think they are only six or seven aging veterans away from contending for the Super Bowl. I'd like to think that the reports that the Raiders are not seriously considering a QB in the 1st Round are just a smoke screen, but then again, it's the Raiders. While Greg Robinson would be a solid pick, Reggie McKenzie is clearly looking to win a few games now in order to save his job instead of finding a long term QB and rebuilding like he should.

6. St. Louis Rams (via projected trade with Atlanta) – Jake Mathews, OT, Texas A and M: With St. Louis set at DE, and with WR's like Sammy Watkins historically devalued by Jeff Fisher, the Rams can afford to trade back and still address their primary need at LT. That would be especially true if Fisher prefers Jake Mathews over Greg Robinson, which would make sense given his relationship with Jake's father, former NFL All-Pro OL Bruce Mathews.

7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Mike Evans, WR, Texas A and M: After having addressed many of their needs in a very aggressive start to the free agency period, the Buccaneers could still use another WR. While it initially looked like they simply needed a speedy receiver to play in the slot, Mike Williams finally wore out his welcome in Tampa Bay after getting stabbed in the thigh by his brother, making either Mike Evans or Plaxico Burress his ideal replacement.

http://tbo.com/list/sports-columns-mfennelly/fennelly-right-move-bucs-now-get-a-receiver-20140405/

8. Minnesota Vikings – Blake Bortels, QB, Central Florida: While Minnesota may be content to wait until the 2nd Round to select a QB, if Blake Bortels were to fall to #9 he may be too good of a prospect for the Vikings to pass up.

9. Buffalo Bills – Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan: Buffalo could go for an OT in the first round, or they could target an OLB, TE or WR. If a legitimate LT like Taylor Lewan is still available, the Bills could move Cordy Glenn to a more natural position like RT or even G where he could put his physicality to better use.

http://q.usatoday.com/2014/02/10/buffalo-bills-nfl-draft-needs-offseason-plan-top-prospects/

10. Detroit Lions - Anthony Barr, LB, UCLA: Don't mistake the Lions doing their due diligence on Sammy Watkins for an interest in trading up to the #2 spot to select him, because that's not going to happen. If Mike Evans is off the board, I'm starting to think that Detroit will pass on a CB even if they have their choice of Justin Gilbert and Darqueze Dennard. The Lions would really like to improve their pass rush, and OLB Anthony Barr may be the three down "flamethrower" that new defensive coordinator Teryl Austin is looking for at the SAM position.

http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2014/04/detroit_lions_want_a_flamethro.html;
http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/gallery?Avis=C4&Dato=20140403&Kategori=SPORTS01&Lopenr=304030086&Ref=PH

11. Tennessee Titans – Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State: With Alterraun Verner leaving in free agency, the Titans have a huge hole at CB. An OLB with proven pass rush skills like Anthony Barr would also be a consideration to fill a need in their new 3-4 defense depending on what Detroit does at #10.

http://www.tennessean.com/story/titansinsider/2014/04/08/alterraun-verner-titans-jason-mccourty-coty-sensabaugh-blidi-wre-wilson-tommie-campbell/7463257/

12. New York Giants – Eric Ebron, TE, North Carolina: The Giants still have needs across the board, but an athletic TE like Eric Ebron might represent the best value at #11 if the top three OT's are off the board. DT Aaron Donald of Pitt could also be a strong consideration.

http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york-giants/post/_/id/35232/big-blue-morning-tackling-tackle

13. St Louis Rams - Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State: St. Louis could stand to upgrade their secondary at both CB and S. With Darqueze Dennard grading out higher than any of the safeties on the board, CB would be the most logical pick for the Rams with their second selection in the 1st Round.

14. Chicago Bears – Timmy Jernigan, DT, Florida State: Timmy Jernigan of Florida State or Aaron Donald of Pittsburgh would seem to be a perfect fits for the Bears as the type of disruptive and penetrating DT who could replace Henry Melton at the "3-Technique."

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/football/bears/25699718-606/bears-challenged-to-fix-defense-like-they-fixed-offense.html;
http://nfltraderumors.co/seahawks-reportedly-love-pittsburgh-dt-aaron-donald/

15. Pittsburgh Steelers – Aaron Donald, DT/DE, Pittsburgh: The "Steel Curtain" is broken, and local product Aaron Donald would be the first step in restoring it to its former glory with his non-stop motor as a DE in Pittsburgh's 3-4 scheme.

http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/steelers/2014/02/03/Ray-Fittipaldo-s-Steelers-chat-transcript-02-03-14/stories/201402030126;

16. Dallas Cowboys - Kony Ealy, DE, Missouri: The Dallas Cowboys are officially rebuilding, Jerry Jones just doesn't realize it yet. The four most important positions in the "Tampa-Two" are DE, DT, WLB and S. Unfortunately, the Cowboys have huge needs at three of those four positions. While Kony Ealy may be a bit of a reach at #16, DE is a position of such importance in Rod Marinelli's system that the Cowboys can't afford to ignore it if Jerry Jones expects to win many games this year. While re-signing DE Anthony Spencer wouldn't hurt, it wouldn't be a solution by itself either.

17. Baltimore Ravens - C.J. Mosley, LB, Alabama: Daryl Smith adequately filled the shoes of Ray Lewis last season, but Baltimore lost another MLB in Jameel McClain this offseason. With the addition of Steve Smith at WR filling one need, ILB C.J. Mosley could help bring the Ravens defense back to being an elite unit. While T could also be an option, the Ravens need is at RT, which is a position that could just as easily be found in the 2nd Round.

http://baltimoresportsandlife.com/baltimore-ravens/ravens-first-round-scouting-report-c-j-mosley

18. New York Jets Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Florida State: The Jets instantly improved their offense by signing Michael Vick, now they need to find him another legitimate receiving target to go along with Eric Decker, who's been more of a #2 receiver throughout his career. Kelvin Benjamin fits the bill of a bigger receiver who can develop into a true #1 target over the next year or two.

19. Miami Dolphins – Zach Martin, T, Notre Dame: The Dolphins addressed the left side of their offensive line in free agency, but still could stand to add another piece or two to the puzzle on the right side via the draft. Zack Martin has the ability to play either RT or RG, giving Miami some much needed flexibility. Even if Taylor Lewan of Michigan happens to be on the board, I can't see him being a consideration for Miami given that he has been charged with battery and is being questioned in connection with allegedly intimidating the victim in a teammate's rape investigation in two separate incidents.

20. Arizona Cardinals - Calvin Pryor, S, Louisville
: The Cardinals can either address a need like S or RT, or go with the best player available with their pick at #20. A tall S like Calvin Pryor would not only fill one of their needs, but provide the Cardinals with better value than any of the remaining OL candidates. They could also consider the explosive Brandin Cooks to play slot receiver and draw some coverage away from Larry Fitzgerald.

21. Green Bay Packers - Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, S, Alabama: The lack of a playmaker at S was a huge problem for Green Bay last season. Ha Ha Clinton-Dix of Alabama would give the Packers some much needed range and ball-skills in the back end of their defense.

22. Philadelphia Eagles - Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon State: Philadelphia could use a S to take over starting duties from Nate Allen, but they also created a need at WR by releasing their best big play threat, DeSean Jackson. If Calvin Pryor and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix are both off the board, the Eagles could turn to Brandin Cooks as an explosive threat at WR to compensate for the loss of Jackson.

http://www.nj.com/eagles/index.ssf/2014/03/nfl_draft_2014_could_brandin_cooks_replace_desean_jackson_for_eagles.html

23. Kansas City Chiefs - Marqise Lee, WR, USC: The Chiefs could go in several different directions in this year's draft, whether it's S, CB, WR or TE. WR Marqise Lee of USC is a safer option than other options like Kelvin Benjamin and Odell Beckham, Jr. of LSU.

24. Cincinnati Bengals - Bradley Roby CB, Ohio State: On paper the Bengals look good at CB, but they are aging and injury prone. Leon Hall is coming off his second Achilles injury, and pro athletes aren't always lucky enough to come back after one Achilles injury, let alone two. Bradley Roby of Ohio State struggled at times last season, but he has the size and speed at CB that NFL teams covet.

http://cincinnati.com/blogs/bengals/2014/02/04/scribe-session-2-4-14-dan-hoard-edition/

25. San Diego Chargers - Dee Ford, OLB/DE, Auburn: With the versatility to excel at either DE in a 4-3 or OLB in a 3-4, Dee Ford would give the Chargers a much needed edge pass rusher. CB and T could also be considerations depending on who might fall to the later part of the first round, but in this scenario, a pass rusher like Ford represents the best value of any remaining player.

26. Cleveland Browns (from Indianapolis) - Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville: The Browns could be gambling if they wait until their second pick in the 1st Round to try and find their new franchise QB. Their ideal situation would have one of the top QB's like Teddy Bridgewater or Derek Carr falling to pick #26, but Cleveland also needs to be aware of other QB needy teams trading back into the 1st Round and taking a signal caller in front of them, which could leave the Browns standing empty handed with a pocket full of draft picks when it comes to the QB position.

27. New Orleans Saints - Kyle Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech: With Patrick Robinson coming off of an injury, the Saints could really use some depth at CB, if not a starter. While Kyle Fuller is not of the caliber of a Justin Gilbert or a Darqueze Dennard, he is a big corner with the man-to-man cover skills that NFL teams value too much for him to slide into the 2nd Round.

28. Carolina Panthers - Odell Beckham, Jr., WR, LSU: Not only do the Panthers still need a #2 WR, but now they need to find a #1 WR to replace Steve Smith after his pissing match with Dave Gettleman lead to his release. While a WR like Odell Beckham Jr. can replace Smith's explosiveness, there's practically no way Carolina can replicate Smith's heart or toughness on the field.

29. New England Patriots - Louis Nix III, NT, Notre Dame: Vince Wilfork is aging and injury prone. While he recently signed a three year contract, Wilfork is 32, and it was structured so that it is essentially just a one year deal. It would therefore make sense for New England to draft a NT to ultimately replace Wilfork in the event that he's released after this season, and Louis Nix III of Notre Dame is essentially as close to a clone to Wilfork as you can get.

30. San Francisco 49ers - Jason Verrett, CB, Texas Christian: With Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown both signing with the Raiders in free agency, the 49ers need to find one or two starting caliber CB's in the draft. Jason Verrett of Texas Christian has excellent cover and ball skills, but could drop due to concerns about his size. At the very least, Verrett would make an ideal nickel back at the NFL level.

31. Denver Broncos - Ra'Shede Hageman, DT/DE, Minnesota: The Broncos did a great job of beefing up their defense in free agency, but with Derek Wolfe coming off of a spinal injury, they could still stand to add a versatile DE/DT like Ra'Shede Hageman to their rotation. Hageman could end up being the steal of the draft considering that he played at Minnesota with very little fanfare or exposure.

32. Seattle Seahawks - Stephon Tuitt, DE, Notre Dame: The Seahawks have relatively few weaknesses after winning the Super Bowl, although they did suffer some losses at DE with Red Bryant and Chris Clemmons departing via free agency. A base DE like Stephon Tuitt could help alleviate those losses and help maintain Seattle's stout run defense.

http://blogs.seattletimes.com/seahawks/2014/02/05/the-blitz-thursday-live-chat/

2nd Round

33. Houston Texans - Kyle Van Noy, OLB: The Texans will be looking for another disruptive OLB. Kyle Van Noy was a playmaker in college, who could fit perfectly in the Houston's 3-4 scheme.

34. Washington Redskins - Cyrus Kouandjio, T, Alabama: Cyrus Kouandjio would not only provide additional protection for RG3 at RT, but a lineman of his size would open holes in the running game, making him an ideal fit with the Redskins.

Speaking of which, let's get the Redskins to change their name to the "Pigskins." It's not racist, it's a football reference that pay homage to Washington's fan base of the 1980's, they could still call themselves "The Skins," and a new hog related logo could help the team sell a boatload of merchandise...Seems like a win-win situation if you ask me.

http://www.hogshaven.com/2014/4/10/5600866/why-the-redskins-need-cyrus-kouandjio

35. Cleveland Browns - Donte Moncrief, WR, Mississippi: A speedster like Donte Moncrief opposite Josh Gordon would make the Cleveland offense downright scary, that is, unless they don't find a QB who can throw them the ball.

https://twitter.com/TonyGrossi

36. Oakland Raiders - Scott Crichton, DE, Oregon State: Once again, the Raiders need impact players at nearly every skilled position. DE is one of those, and Scott Crichton of Oregon State simply dominated in the Pac-12 the past few seasons.

http://blog.sfgate.com/raiders/2014/01/16/some-other-quick-hits-from-the-mckenzie-chat/

37. Atlanta Falcons - Morgan Moses, T, Virginia: Assuming Atlanta holds on to their 2nd Round pick, a LT to potentially replace Sam Baker would be the logical pick assuming they elect to go with a DE in the 1st Round.

38. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Marcus Roberson, CB, Florida: With the Bucs moving back to a "Tampa-2" defense under new defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, they will need to modify their secondary to better fit that system. Local product Marcus Roberson of Florida would provide Tampa Bay with depth at CB, and be a better fit than Johnthan Banks, who struggled in his first year.

http://www.tampabay.com/blogs/bucs/center-signed-bucs-still-have-needs-in-free-agency/2170317

39. Jacksonville Jaguars - Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State: Finding it too difficult to pass on Sammy Watkins with the third pick in the draft, the Jags must then find their QB of the future. Derek Carr is the only other signal caller who fits that bill, although Jacksonville may have to trade up back to the end of the first round to be assured that they can still get him.

40. Minnesota Vikings - Ryan Shazier, LB, Ohio State: Minnesota has a hole at OLB, and Ryan Shazier is a beast who can immediately slide into a starting role and make an impact.

http://www.startribune.com/video/251117041.html#hpmrt

41. Buffalo Bills - Dominique Easley, DE, Florida: New defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz loves his DE's, and Dominique Easley would have been a high first round pick but for a knee injury last season.

http://q.usatoday.com/2014/02/10/buffalo-bills-nfl-draft-needs-offseason-plan-top-prospects/;
http://bills.buffalonews.com/2014/04/08/road-draft-anthony-barr/

42. Tennessee Titans - Kareem Martin, DE, North Carolina: After beefing up their secondary, Tennessee should look to bolster their pass rush. With OLB's Akeem Ayers and Zach Brown more traditional 4-3 LB's, Kareem Martin of North Carolina could fit in as a pass rush specialist for the Titans.

http://www.tennessean.com/article/20140119/SPORTS01/301190056/Wyatt-Titans-roster-needs-makeover-key-positions

43. New York Giants - Xavier Su'a Filo, G/T, UCLA: As the Giants try to rebuild their offensive line to take some pressure off of Eli Manning, either Xavier Su'a Filo of UCLA or David Yankey of Stanford would give them a versatile player could either excel at either G or OT. If Su'a Filo makes it to pick #43, he's the higher rated option of the two.

44. St. Louis Rams - Deone Bucannon, S, Washington State: If the Rams can address LT, CB and S with their first three picks, I think they'd be pretty happy. On top of that, if they can successfully trade down from pick #2, they could even land another 2nd Round pick where there will still be many top notch WR's available.

45. Detroit Lions - Jordan Mathews, WR, Vanderbilt: The Lions would be well served passing on Mike Evans in the 1st Round and targeting a more reliable WR like Jordan Mathews in the 2nd. Matthews may not be the fastest WR in the draft, but he might be the most polished. With route running and film study often outweighing speed when it comes to transitioning to the NFL, Matthews might not only be one of the safer picks at WR, but he would be an ideal compliment to Calvin Johnson as someone who can get open in single coverage and reliably catch the ball.

46. Pittsburgh Steelers - Davante Adams, WR, Fresno State: The Steelers are looking for a big receiver to play opposite of Antonio Brown, and if they address defense instead of WR in the 1st Round, Davante Adams of Fresno State could fill that role.

http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/steelers/2014/02/12/Gerry-Dulac-s-Steelers-chat-transcript-2-12-14/stories/201402120146

47. Dallas Cowboys - Lamarcus Joyner, CB/S, Florida State: Dallas could go for a S, a WLB, or address their OL in the 2nd Round. LaMarcus Joyner of Florida State is a hybrid CB/S, which would make him a perfect fit for the Cowboys at S in their "Two-Deep" defense, where safeties are taught to be interchangeable, and also need to be able to keep up with WR's in deep zone coverage.

48. Baltimore Ravens - Antonio Richardson, T, Tennessee: With Michael Oher leaving via free agency the Ravens have a need at RT, and if Antonio Richardson ultimately develops into a starter at LT, even better.

49. New York Jets - Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE, Washington: After addressing WR in the 1st Round, the Jets could finish overhauling their receiving corps by selecting an elite pass catching TE like Austin Seferian-Jenkins or Jace Amaro in the 2nd.

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2014/02/nfl_combine_jets_have_options_if_they_want_to_supplement_tight_end_position_in_nfl_draft.html

50. Miami Dolphins - Gabe Jackson, G, Mississippi State: By taking a RT in the 1st Round and a top G like Gabe Jackson in the 2nd Round of the draft, the Dolphins could finish transforming an offensive line that was a huge problem last year into an asset this season.

51. Chicago Bears - Jimmy Ward, S, LSU: After addressing DT in the first round, a hybrid S with ball hawking skills like Jimmy Ward of Northern Illinois would go a long way towards checking off most of the defensive needs of the Bears heading into the 2014 season.

52. Arizona Cardinals - David Yankey, G/T, Stanford: Arizona could look to address the interior of their OL or even RT with the versatile David Yankey of Stanford.

53. Green Bay Packers - Jeremiah Attaochu, DE/OLG, Georgia Tech: After unsuccessfully trying to convert several college DE's to play OLB in their 3-4 defense, it's time for Green Bay to go in the other direction and find a more athletic college LB to play opposite Clay Mathews. Jeremiah Attaochu of Georgia Tech has the skills to rush the passer, drop in coverage, and contain the edge against the run, all of which were all traits that Green Bay's OLB's noticeably lacked in their Divisional Playoff Game loss to Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers last January.

54. Philadelphia Eagles - Dion Bailey, S, USC: Philadelphia finished 32nd in the league in passing defense last season, and their biggest hole was at S. Dion Bailey of USC should be able to overtake Nate Allen and Earl Wolff as the other starting S opposite Malcolm Jenkins.

55. Cincinnati Bengals - Marcus Smith, DE, Louisville: Michael Johnson was a disappointment at DE in his contract year, so Cincinnati was smart to let him walk rather than overpaying him. Marcus Smith of Louisville was not only the heart and soul of one of the nation's top defenses, but he was also one of college football's best pass rushers.

56.  San Francisco 49ers - Paul Richardson, WR, Colorado: The 49ers biggest obstacle to returning to the Super Bowl are their division rivals, the Seattle Seahawks. The best way to counteract Seattle's super-sized secondary is with quickness, and that's where an explosive player like Paul Richardson in the slot could help not only negate the size advantage in the Seahawks' secondary, but possibly even turn it into a liability.

57. San Diego Chargers - Will Sutton, DT/DE, Arizona State: Will Sutton's draft stock fell some after he gained nearly 50 pounds and saw his production significantly drop from his junior to his senior seasons. The good news is that his weight gain appears to have been premeditated, so if Sutton can prove to front offices that he has lost that weight and that his explosiveness has returned, he could be the answer to San Diego's need on the interior of their defensive line.

58. New Orleans Saints - Jarvis Landry, WR, LSU: The locals are clamoring for New Orleans to address their need at WR with Jarvis Landry of LSU.

http://www.nola.com/saints/index.ssf/2014/04/lsu_wide_receiver_jarvis_landr.html

59. Indianapolis Colts - Cyril Richardson, G, Baylor: The Colts would be wise to bolster the interior of their offensive line with at least two of their picks in this year's draft. Cyril Richardson of Baylor is a monster of a man who could clog interior pass rushing lanes and open up holes for the Colts' running game.

60. Carolina Panthers - Joe Bitonio, T, Nevada: Having lost LT Jordan Gross to retirement, the Panthers need to find a replacement early in this year's draft. Joe Bitonio is a smaller school option who more than held his own when Nevada played against big time opponents like Anthony Barr of UCLA.

61. San Francisco 49ers - Loucheiz Purifoy, CB, Florida: Loucheiz Purifoy of Florida is an aggressive and physical CB who would make for an excellent pair with Jason Verrett if the 49ers were to take him in the 1st Rd.

62. New England Patriots - Jace Amaro, TE, Texas Tech: With Aaron Hernandez's career over and Rob Gronkowski heading back to see Dr. James Andrews, Jace Amaro of Texas A&M seems to be New England's prime target to replace Hernandez at TE given his size and pass catching ability.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1967930-karen-guregian-patriots-focusing-on-aaron-hernandez-clone-jace-amaro-at-te\

63. Denver Broncos - Chris Borland, ILB, Wisconsin: Chris Borland of Wisconsin is an instinctive player who can fill a hole at ILB for the Broncos, which is one of their final needs on defensive after a busy free agency period.

http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_25175895/broncos-prepare-address-needs-upcoming-nfl-draft

64. Seattle Seahawks - Stanley Jean-Baptiste, CB, Nebraska: Stanley Jean-Baptiste is not the fastest CB, but he has great size. There's probably no better mutual fit between team and player than Jean-Baptiste and the Seahawks, where he can ultimately replace Brandon Browner as one of the super-sized DB's that Seattle prefers.

Detroit Lions Potential Picks, Rounds 3 - 7

Here's how the rest of the 2014 Draft could work out in terms of projected value and need for the Detroit Lions:

Round 3,  Pick No. 12 - Craig Loston, S, LSU: While strong safety Glover Quinn is solid, he lacks the speed to be a true free safety, while recent free agent signee James Ihedigbo is more of a one year bridge/backup at strong safety. Craig Loston is someone who can contribute immediately on special teams and ultimately work his way into a starting role.

http://espn.go.com/blog/detroit-lions/tag/_/name/craig-loston

Round 4, Pick No. 11 - Aaron Murray, QB, Georgia: The Lions are going to regret not freeing up enough money to re-sign Shawn Hill, who may have been the best backup QB in the league. Jim Caldwell should know that Dan Orlovsky is not the answer, as his inability to adequately replace Peyton Manning helped cost him his job in Indianapolis three years ago.

http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2014/04/report_detroit_lions_meet_with.html

Round 4, Compensatory Pick - Weston Richburg, C, Colorado State: Not only is Weston Richburg one of the top three centers in this year's draft, but he seems to be very interested in playing for the Lions. The feeling should be mutual. With Dominic Raiola nearing the final years of his career, Richburg could serve as an understudy and even help the Lions out as a backup G. Gabe Ikard could also be a later round option at C.

http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2014/01/detroit_lions_weston_richburg.html

Round 4, Compensatory Pick - C.J. Fiedorowicz, TE, Iowa: Even after the Lions retained the much maligned Brandon Pettigrew in free agency, they should be looking for a hybrid TE who can block and serve as a weapon in the passing game in order to keep second year player Mike Williams on the practice squad. At 6-5 and 260 pounds, C.J. Fiedorowicz fits that bill, having been known as a solid blocker and being more athletic as a receiver than many think.

http://espn.go.com/blog/detroit-lions/post/_/id/5313/lions-position-outlook-tight-ends

Round 6, Pick No. 13 - Denicos Allen, OLB, Michigan State: While the Lions haven't placed much emphasis on strong side LB in recent years, new defensive coordinator Teryl Austin has expressed a willingness to blitz more than the Jim Schwartz regime. That would make a lighter and athletic OLB like Denicos Allen as an ideal late round pick as a developmental project who can both drop back into coverage and rush the passer, allowing Ashley Palmer to serve primarily as a backup at the "Mike" and "Will" LB positions.

http://espn.go.com/blog/detroit-lions/tag/_/name/denicos-allen

Round 7 - Pick No. 12 - Cody Parkey, K, Auburn: Prior to the David Akers debacle last season, the Lions only had two PK's from 1980 through 2012 in Eddie Murray in Jason Hanson, either of whom the Lions would have probably signed last season had they been interested.
